An outtake from an assignment this weekend

It's good to remember, when I'm taking pictures on assignment, to take a few pictures for myself as well. It's definitely one way to push myself to keep developing my eye, and it also serves as a reminder of why I'm out here doing this. I've been looking at Luc Delahaye's book Winterreise a lot this week, analyzing the images, and the editing and sequencing of them, and wondering just how in the world he got some of those pictures. It's one of my favorite photography books, and it's no surprise I found myself imitating him a little (whoops...I mean, "allowing myself to be influenced by his work") while photographing for a feature on great cafes, bars and restaurants.

Um, did I say this was an outtake...?? So, it turns out that I accidentally submitted this image with my edit. And it turns out that this was one of the images that my editor selected to run in the issue. It was great seeing the image in print. It's so different, both in terms of style and content, from what you normally see in the magazine. So I feel like I've made a small impact on the magazine's visual style this week. Well, I guess if there's a moral to this story, it's that I should trust my instincts more when I'm on assignment.
